My New Favorite Thing Ever: Wooden Spurtles + a Giveaway!

February 20, 2015 Rachel 8 Comments

I am SO excited to share with you my latest obsession: WOODEN SPURTLES!!

What is a spurtle?

(pictured below left to right, is the Original Spurtle, the Mary’s Spurtle, and the Turned Scottish Spurtle)

According to Polder’s Old World Kitchen:
“The Spurtle is a traditional Scottish utensil. The Scottish use their spurtle to flip oatcakes and stir porridge (the national food of Scotland), but you can use your spurtles in so many ways! These unique wood utensils are the new rage but it is diffcult to find solid wood spurtles like our’s. Use them to saute, stir fry and turn steaks. Flip fried eggs with ease, mix fresh blueberry pancakes and even stir your cold summer beverages.”

Basically I was sold. I needed these.

They were different, unlike anything I’d ever seen, and looked fun to use! Not only that, they were (are) stunning!

I was over-the-moon when I was contacted by them to review their utensils and offer a giveaway

FOR YOU!! MY BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL READERS!!

But let me tell you the story of Polder’s Old World Market|Old World Kitchen first. Because I really think their story is what makes them special.

The Polders are a family of artisans. Together they started from scratch with big dreams and hard work, building their business on a farm in Tennessee using local hardwoods, like black walnut, hickory, oak,  maple, cherry, beech, and more!  Each utensil is hand-carved, often made-to-order, and comes with a lifelong guarantee (although they could easily be heirloom pieces if taken care of).

When I received them in the mail, I seriously didn’t want to use them for a couple days because they were just so so beautiful. The grain! The craftsmanship! And they were very soft and smooth to pet. 🙂

Each one is signed by the artist. A little touch that makes it *that* much more special.

I also received this Righty Spurtle, made for a right-handed gal like me 🙂 (They also make ’em for lefties)

It’s almost like a mix of a spoon and a spatula. This side (facing up) is rounded on the edges, making flipping food easy, and the other side is flat, so it scrapes with ease as well!

The shape of the handle feels so comfortable in your hand…

After I got over the ‘admire and pet’ stage, I started using them! I will be posting some recipes soon, but here are a couple shots of took of how I used a them so far…

I came up with a raspberry lemonade recipe and the Turned Spurtle was perfect to use when stirring it up! Just one of the many uses for this one…

Images-6

This no-bake granola bar recipe is the best and so much cheaper (and healthier) than store-bought granola bars! I used the Original Spurtle during the whole process and it was a dream to use!

Images-7

My youngest had fun making the granola bars and couldn’t resist licking the spurtle! 😉

Here’s that beauty shot again… are you ready to enter?
