As I shared last week, updating our exterior has been on my mind a lot. I got a plan and now today, I’m sharing how to make a DIY House Number Sign that has a cute planter and some modern metal vertical numbers. This sign was super easy to build and really completed the big empty space on the side of our door. We never liked how the previous numbers were faded and sitting above the garage, so this was on our ‘to-do’ list for a long time. When I worked a fun exterior project for Home Depot’s DIY Challenge a couple weeks ago (to be shared in a couple weeks), I knew I needed something simple but with character. This number sign fit the bill!
I love the style of these numbers and I found them at Home Depot (they totally remind me of something I’d find at Anthro)!
So here is the tutorial…

Circular saw
Cordless Brad Nailer (or pneumatic nail gun)

Here are the step-by-step instructions via video!
What do you think? Such a fun and easy update, right?
We love it and when we paint the house white, it will really pop. Next up… wrapping the columns in stained wood!

Very beautiful! Thanks for sharing
Very cute. Love your blog!!!
Where did you buy your numbers?
You can get the same ones at Lowes, i actually bought them right before i saw this!
It looks like the listed measurements/supplies are for the four number option. What are the measurements for the three number option like the one in the photo? Thank you.
Very beautiful! These house numbers suit your house really well! A nice DIY job!
How did u paint ur siding? The front door color is beautiful too!! please give me info on color and brand of paint. Thank you. Gorgeous
Where did you purchase your numbers? Did not see them at Lowes or Home Depot 🙁
They are at Home Depot. This is the brand/style: https://www.homedepot.com/p/The-Hillman-Group-5-in-Elevated-Number-3-843063/100585051
Love how the small planter with the numbers look. I know in your tutorial video you used measurements for a four digit address but how much difference is there on a three digit format? Thanks.
Is it possible to make this into a Welcome sign! I live about 1/4 of a mile from the road and a number sign is not visible. But a Welcome sign at the front door is a nice touch. Also, what do you do in the winter with the planter box? Do you use greens or silk plants? Thanks for all your wonderful ideas and information!
Yes you could make a welcome sign, but I would try to find smaller letters so the sign wouldn’t have to be too big. Also, I do put faux greens in the planter in winter!
Anyone ever get the three number measurements?
Did you only put clear silicon in the holes? And not an anchor of some sort? Is it holding well?
I used cement screws- no anchor. It’s not super heavy, so anchors weren’t/aren’t needed. It is holding perfect! Very secure.
What an amazing transformation! This number sign turned out so beautiful. I am setting a goal to do a couple home improvement projects this year. I think we are going to start out with some kitchen cabinet refinishing. Thanks again for sharing your beautiful ideas! You are so inspiring!
