DIY Craftsman Style Outdoor Shutters

July 29, 2016 Rachel 20 Comments

I’ve been waiting forever to share this with ya’ll! A few weeks ago I built these DIY Craftsman Style Outdoor Shutters and I am so pleased with how they turned out. They really made the front of our house look so much more polished and updated. I participated in the Home Depot DIY Challenge and I was assigned to ‘lumber’. Take a look!

To see what the house looked like before this little update, GO HERE.

I saw lots of shutters tutorials online but I wanted mine a little different. As you may remember from my Exterior Home Makeover plan, I wanted 3 rails on my shutters, visible grooves, and hinges.

I painted them a more subdued aqua, called Wythe Blue by Benjamin Moore.

And of course had to paint my front door to match. If you want to see how I made that cool number sign with planter CLICK HERE.  The wreath was also something I put together… I love the summery colors, don’t you?

I CANNOT wait to paint the brick and build the columns, but I have to be patient… I have a lot of sticks in the fire already. We may get to it this year, we may not.

Until then, it is looking so much better and I’m happy with the results.

You are so talented! They make a huge difference. But I have to say I love your red brick. I just love love love red bricks. Maybe it’s from serving in the South where brick homes are everywhere and so classic 🙂

Love the shutters. I want to do some. But please don’t paint the brick. I did that to a house that I lived in. And a maintenance free house turned into a house I needed to keep up with the paint. Yep I have a new brick house and not about to paint it lol

    Hi …

Im interested in your craftsman shutters from Home Depot. When I open the blog to
get pictures for your instructions, no pictures show up. Can you provide them?

    Thanks

Gayle, I’m sorry the tutorial belongs to Home Depot so I can’t provide pictures. Their site must be having issues. I’ll ask their support team to look into it but I know they don’t work on weekends.

Love this style of shutters. What material did you build them out of? We live in Illinois and need to use something that would stand up to the weather.

I love the gray shutters with the cedar planter boxes….this looks so amazing. Something you would see in a magazine. Great job!

Beautiful and creative. We’re looking to follow your plan but but the Home Depot link has a different hinge than yours. Can you share where you got your hinges? Or at least the measurements?
