So here is the dresser I wish I could have kept. It was perfect. I found it for a great deal on craigslist and it came with a pretty mirror! The condition was great, I only had to make a few minor repairs, it was solid oak, it had keyholes (!) and pretty legs. I knew immediately what I wanted to paint on it… Union Jack Revisited in Gray!!
Here is the before: (notice the gray hardware looks ridiculous with the light oak stain! I hated the hardware at first!)
Like that cute little half-naked baby? That’s my youngest, and yes I’m so classy I let me kids run around like that sometimes. Just so you know we live on an acre of land and trees surround our home, so you cannot even see a single neighbor when there is foliage on the trees! It’s awesome.
I did the same technique with the design… I used my projector. I also had to go out and buy 2 quarts of ASCP (ouch!) but I knew they were very neutral colors that I could easily use again and make my money back. Isn’t it awesome?! *sigh* The colors I used were French Linen for the body and mirror, and Old White and Country Gray for the Union Jack design. I then distressed it and clear waxed it.
The hardware looks great with all the gray/neutral tones now!
I actually got two requests to do this same design in the same colors for different dressers! I’m happy I’ll be doing this one again (and again)!
I’m loving this. I recently just did a union jack coffee table with muted colors. I love how this came out.
Thank you! And your coffee table was so pretty! Love the gray and blue together!
This is beyond gorgeous! Love it! I’d love for you to share this at my party, Twirl & Take a Bow at http://www.houseontheway.com
It would be a great addition!

Thank you! I just did, thanks for referring me to your site! It’s lovely!
This turned out SO pretty! I know that feeling of wanting to keep the pieces we do. My girls feel that way a lot too since I do a lot of French pieces. 🙂 I did a union jack piece once and now wish I would have used a projector!!! Smart thinking!

I know right? But I feel it’s probably a good thing you want to keep your work, because then you know you are doing a really good job! Thanks for the positive feedback!
I love it! I’m curious if you have a tutorial somewhere in the remote chance that I might want to attempt creating a beauty like this for myself.
I will do a tutorial of sorts soon hopefully. I’ve been too busy lately to officially put one together, but it’s on my to do list for sure! Thanks for the feedback!
I love, love, love this union jack makeover. Especially with the more muted paint colors! I can see why it will be hard to sell this piece. Great job! -Angela @ Mrs. White Twig & Tea
Thanks so much! You’re sweet! Your work is lovely too!
Hi Rachel! I was browsing CL (I’m in Ofallon, MO) a few weeks ago and I saw this dresser. I was starting to get kinda tired of the Union Jack thing but yours looked sooooo good. I loved the muted colors and how timeless it looks. You took a trend that was getting a little old and made it completly new and trendy again. I saw your link at the MMS party and thought it looked familiar! : )
I also paint and sale furniture in the STL area. I just wanted to say hi and tell you I think your stuff is great!!!
Thanks Helen! I appreciate the positive feedback!
