Makeover Monday: Eastlake Chair with Floral Fabric

March 30, 2015 Rachel 10 Comments

It’s Makeover Monday! Today I’m showing you the first among several upholstery projects I’ve been working on… an Eastlake Chair with a floral fabric makeover… no paint used! Are you shocked?? 😉

I’ve been crushing hard on florals lately. Anyone else feel me?

I hit up Joann’s last week and grabbed a few different floral fabrics, ready give these chairs a new life. This particular fabric is my favorite:

Sometimes a chair doesn’t need to be painted, ya know?

This was my first time sewing double welting AND I sewed them on the bias (fist pump)!

 Here is the before:

The before isn’t terrible, but I didn’t like the weird shimmery swirls in the fabric, plus it was a little dirty.

Now, this? This, is my better, friends. Florals are trending big-time right now.  And I think this color palette is the perfect punch of color, but still having those neutrals that are so easy to coordinate with: gray and beige. The fabric is HGTV Garden Odyssey Fog and is not cheap.

But sometimes a great fabric update is almost as dramatic is a painted update, don’t you think?

A pair of these chairs (same fabric) will be heading to St Louis Vintage Market Days in a few weeks!

I use a porter cable compressor upholstery staple gun… It costs around $80 I think on Amazon. Well worth it in my opinion!

That fabric is awesome – I’m totally feeling florals lately too – must be springtime 🙂

Love it! I have a similar chair with the original fabric. I can’t figure out how to re-upholster around the angle pieces at the sides of the seat.

Love the fabric you used. Great choice! I’ve seen a few Eastlake chairs for sale and they always look too masculine. But the floral makes the hard lines not so harsh! Beautiful job.

So weird. I just googled “funky eastlake paint” and the first pic that popped up were the chairs I bought from you two years ago! They are happy in their New Orleans Eastlake home!

You could definitely paint the fabric, but it will change the feel of the fabric, and I’m not a fan of the way painted fabric feels. Since it’s easy to reupholster a chair like this, in my opinion, it’s easier to switch out the fabric.
