Dilemma: My budget is less than $50.
Solution? Make something similar yourself using things you probably have in your home right now!
And I have to give credit where it is due here… I did not come up with this idea myself! I recently bought the September issue of HGTV magazine and saw this idea in there and had to try it myself!
I went to the thrift store on the hunt for a lamp base that had some great curves. And I quickly found this large brassy thing, which fit the bill! AND it was only $7.50!
So here are the supplies you will need:
1. Old, ugly lamp base with nice curves. 🙂
2. 1 roll of jute twine (for this size, I didn’t use an entire roll. I finished off a smaller roll and used a bit of
     another roll.)
3. Hot glue gun (I used my mini size, high temp, which I already had)
4. Hot glue sticks – about 50 mini sticks (could use less, depending on how glue happy you are!)
5. Lamp shade (I got mine at Target for $20)
6. Light bulb
Total spent: $35
(which you could spend less if you found a good deal on a lamp shade, which was most of the expense, or if you already have gobs of hot glue sticks and jute twine!)
There isn’t much to this tutorial to be honest. I pretty much just started wrapping and gluing, trying my best to get the twine rows as close together as possible.
Thrift store lamp base
Work in small sections, so don’t squeeze out more than an inch or two of glue at a time because it can easily get messy and will dry quickly (especially on cool brass).
Gluing jute twine on thrift store brass lamp base
Because this is supposed to look like it was wrapped in rope, try not to go all perfectionist on this. Sometimes my rows weren’t perfectly close together and I could see the brass showing through. So the next time I wrapped the jute around, I overlapped and going down a couple rows, then up a couple rows, doing my best to cover areas that I missed while trying to mimic the look of coiled rope: slightly uneven yet uniform. Does that make any sense? I hope so! 🙂

I would definitely recommend doing this while watching a movie or something that you can enjoy listening to while you wrap and wrap and glue and wrap and glue…. AND WRAP AND GLUE for about 2-3 hours.

Such a transformation and SO much less expensive than buying something similar for more than triple the price!

You did a great job. I recently tackled a large wall clock and looking at it on the wall, well let’s just say it looks pretty good from the floor and was considerably less expensive than the one in the magazine. It was my first attempt at a “hack” and while my fingers were pretty sore from the hot glue, and I am not sure I would do it again, I am glad I did it just once 🙂 I did not use jute. It seems to stick in my fingers and I think I might be allergic to it because my hands get very red and itchy. I bought a small diameter rope and soaked it in very strong “Earl Grey” breakfast tea! Wrung it out (no rinsing), dried it then wrapped it. It is special and all mine 🙂 Thanks for sharing.

Love jute wrapping- keep doing it to many big/small things at home as its easy + economical, i hope i don’t overdo it :P. Now your idea makes me want to try in on a lamp stand. Yours looks so cool.
