IT’S A PIANO!
I teased a bit on Instagram, talking about a big fun piece of furniture that we got, only giving a sneak of the decor on the top… and I guess TECHNICALLY this is an instrument… but it also is furniture in my mind! 🙂
This past year my husband and I decided we really wanted a piano for our home. He always had lessons growing up and I always had one in my home as a child, so it was a sentimental goal as well as practical, since we want our kids to learn to play.
Even the used ones that are good, are expensive. Well, the stars aligned and 2 weekends ago we found one for an unbelievable price, so we scooped it up! And I say that in the most figurative sense… it was a beast to move apparently… I watched this time while the men did the work hehe… 🙂
As you can see, the condition of the wood isn’t great, but it IS an antique Howard Baldwin (I know nothing about pianos, but I read it isn’t a bad maker), and it works great too! The black keys are so worn that the wood is starting to show through, and the ivory keys have little chips on the edges, but that doesn’t bother me a bit. I like things that have been around awhile… things that have a story.
It needs to be tuned, but most of the keys still sound great and this past week I was able to teach my oldest the basics of Chopsticks.
This isn’t the final reveal though. Because of all the chips in the wood, water stains on the top, and general poor condition of the wood, I’m not going to spend lots of $$ and time trying to restore it. Instead I’m going to PAINT it! Surprised? haha I didn’t think so…
I want to keep it dark and I don’t want to compete in color too much with the green sofa in this room, so I’m thinking a very dark charcoal gray… like ASCP Graphite with dark wax.
But JUST because this gal isn’t ready for her final reveal yet, doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve some beauty shots and pretty decor on top, right?
Do you own a piano? Do you PLAY? If so… COME TEACH ME! 😉
I love your idea for the piano! Where did you originally find your sofa you painted?
Hi Paige! I found it on Craigslist! There were a lot with a similar style, but after a month or so of vigilant checking within my price range, I finally found one! It was a beast to transport (borrowed a friend’s van) but it was worth it! 🙂
I love the way you styled this! My oldest has been asking for a piano but I haven’t even looked around because of how pricey they are. And the beast to move thing too…
It’s such a gorgeous piece!!! Great find and I love how you’ve styled it. I’m totally with you on pieces that have character, makes them more special!
