You guys this is such a sad, pathetic before!!
You’d think, being a seasoned furniture painter (but still a relatively newbie blogger), I’d finally get in the habit of taking adequate ‘before’s. This is NOT! I’m sorry. I’ll try to be better next time. I sometimes get too excited to get started on something, that I just do it, without any prep. Hence, pretty much all my clothes are paint-stained. 🙂
I polled my fb fans a few weeks ago and showed them this picture as inspiration for a hepplewhite dresser that I would be painting.
Several people commented and I got 22 votes for #1, 7 for #2, and 14 for #3. Guys, if you are not already liking my page, get with the program! 😉 We have FUN and I like to give sneak peaks of new purchases I make!
Anyhow, since #1 won, I went with it. Only I didn’t paint the top graphite, I preferred the dark walnut stained look.
And p.s. I was not planning on these picture being published on the blog. Believe it or not, I had found a cool barn I wanted to photograph it in front of, but the weather was not cooperating…. for like A WEEK STRAIGHT! and I knew I needed to post SOMETHING on craigslist so I just threw this together and first showed my peeps on facebook.
Within an hour of me posting it (maybe less), it was sold. I was shocked, thrilled and sad to this this go so soon. 🙂
I painted the body Old White, and the drawers Provence. Then I used dark wax SPARINGLY on the old white portion, and then a little more liberally on the already distressed areas of the drawers.
Just looking at this makes me miss that dresser. I’ve waited FOREVER to find an affordable hepplewhite for me to paint. A hole-in-the-wall estate sale was where I found her, in the corner of a basement with lots of cigar boxes on top. And the top drawer I could barely, get open, so I had to do some sanding and waxing to get it smooth gliding again.
The entire thing I gave a coat of shellac to, because it was mahogany stain, which bleeds. Then I sanded the top down, stained dark walnut, dark waxed it, and buffed to a shine.
The best part of her selling so fast? It was to a friend of mine who was in the process of packing and moving across the country! She was getting rid of all kinds of extra furniture she had, but couldn’t resist this beauty (who could blame her? ;))! haha
This is a beautiful piece!
Congratulations! It looks great and I love the frame behind it. 🙂
Your color selection and application of the light and dark waxes is perfect! It really turned out beautifully. I hope you don’t mind if I Pin It for future project ideas!

Gorgeous piece! I can totally relate on before pics. I’m always too eager to start painting and just dive in. I’m another St. Louis furniture refinisher — your work is inspiring!
