Wing Chair Slipcover

January 2, 2013 Rachel Leave a Comment

Remember awhile back I showed you all these wing chairs I got for FREE from a friend? Well, while my mom was in town, we decided to tackle Miss Mustard Seed’s Slipcover Tutorial!

We took her advice and sewed some dining chair slipcovers with ruffles first (I’ll show that when I do my big dining set reveal, sneak peek at the end). Once we felt confident with that, we tackled the chair. The arms my my chair are much more difficult (I think) that a standard wing chair like she has in her tutorial. That is the reason the fabric looks a little wonky in some parts and has weird pulls and puckering. BUT. She assures many times in the video that it doesn’t have to be perfect because it is a slipcover! They aren’t supposed to be perfect!
(We finished it before Christmas so, it resided next to our tree. but boy was I glad to clean everything out and rearrange furniture New Year’s weekend!)

It took my mom and I, 2 days to finish it (obviously not non-stop… I have 3 kids that occasionally need food and attention! haha) This is how she looks now!

Despite the imperfections, I’m happy with it. I love using drop cloths! I also made that pillow you see below! The back is drop cloth canvas, the front is chevron fabric (from hob lob) and burlap, and I used some extra piping I had from the slipcovers, and put it on the edge of the pillows (I did two for a Christmas gift). It gave it a slightly more custom look. I didn’t use a pattern, but I did measure the size I wanted from a down pillow form I had already, and sewed the back, envelope style, for easy removal.

Now I’m just gearing up enough courage to tackle the other one on my own! Or my might just wait till my mom comes to visit again! 🙂

And here is my sneak peak for the dining set I have in the works! It was a Thomasville set I got on Craigslist for $100 (came with 2 leaves and 7 chairs! It was quite the project to strip the top and stain dark walnut, but SO worth it! I painted the bottom part Old White and dark waxed it.  I just have to finish the chairs and I will reveal the whole thing!
