Last weekend, we FINALLY tackled a project that has been on my to-do list for a year! All it takes is deadline from eHow! haha! Today I’m sharing how to build a pallet accent wall and this project is super simple with such a big impact. We mount our TV on this wall, so we also figured out the easiest way to create pathways for all the wires BEHIND the pallet wall.
The finished product make a huge difference in this room:
Just as a refresher, this is what it looked like a few weeks ago at the Fall Home Tour:
Once the TV was mounted and the wires were hidden, I haven’t wanted to put the dresser back into place that was sitting below it. It just doesn’t look right, plus it takes up tons of space! Instead, to hold the speaker, we quickly mounted this reclaimed barn wood shelf with some oak brackets, under the TV.
There does need to be some storage to hold all the games and movies that was in the dresser, so I’m going to build a built-in bench that is the same height and width as the cabinet-bases of the bookcases. It will also hide the outlets and subwoofer, that need to still sit on this wall, but I’m disguising currently with a basket and a pouf.
Next week I’ll be sharing how to trim these bookcases out to look like built-ins…. another eHow tutorial that I’m so excited about! This room is nearing the finish line!
Because the pallet accent wall makes such a statement, I took some of the “clutter” from the coffee table off, and tried to simplify things a bit.
We are over the moon about this wall now, and it only really took an afternoon and 4 pallets to create this wall!
Here is the link to the tutorial I wrote on eHow:
How to Build a Pallet Accent Wall
UPDATE!
It’s been over a year since I finished the pallet wall, so I thought you might like to see an updated picture of what it looks like now!
Since completing the pallet accent wall, I…
Trimmed out the bookcases to look like built-ins (tutorial here),
&
Built a storage bench between the two bookcases to hold decor items, and the subwoofer and speaker (tutorial here).
If you want to see the rest of this room and how things look now, check out my Spring Home Tour 2017.

Absolutely love this room! Fabulous job on everything. Would love white slipcovered sofas, but alas, I’ve got four little boys that think nothing of putting muddy shoes on furniture!. Been trying to talk my husband into doing a pallet wall also. I’m curious about the wall color. It’s like the perfect neutral to go with the reclaimed wood. What is it?
Kristin says
Regarding the slip covers I have two dogs that mess mine up so I had two made so that I can put one on when the other is at the cleaners. Costs a bit more but not as much as constantly replacing a sofa! Also use lots of throws and then remove most when company comes over!

It turned out so great! love it 🙂

Holy moly, FABULOUS!
Katie says
Oh my goodness what a difference this makes in your space! It looks amazing and adds so much character. Too funny about the deadline, those tend to help me get things done too though, lol.
Kristina says
Where did you find your shelving units? I am trying to find some just like them and am struggling.
Molly Hawk says
Stunning!! Yes, I too would love a response as to where you got the bookcases from?? They are EXACTLY what I’ve always pictured in our livingroom. Thanks so much!
Jessica says
Do you know what paint color the before wall is by chance?
Rachel says
Yes it is Valspar Redstone Dakota Sandstone
Gina says
Like other comments I’d like to know where you got shelves/bookcases as well.
Also … do you have hardwood floors? Does the pallet wood clash with the wood floor? I noticed the rug – which looks great but I was wondering in case you had hardwood floors.
Rachel says
I got the bookcases from Home Depot who no longer carries them but I would totally recommend IKEA– they aren’t as solid wood but they work just fine. I’ve had friends that made them work beautifully! And yes I have Brazilian cherry hardwood floors and no they don’t clash.
Gina says
Oh another question. Sorry. Where can you get the used pallets? Any suggestions? 🙂
Patton Ford says
Love this wall! What kind of strips did you use for the molding on the outer edges of the pallet planks? Thanks!
Christina says
Where did you get the shelf / mantle under the tv? Thanks.
Karen says
Do you remember where you got the rug? Maybe even the brand name?

How do I get to the DIY for lined curtains? Link takes you to pallet wall & bookcase instructions.

I’d love to see the instructions for the drapes as well, but it just takes you to the pallet wall instructions.
would you please provide link to the drapes tutorial? many thanks!

Do you know the height at which you hung your TV from the floor? I am imaging this same concept in my new living room.
Christina says
Hi! I love your wall and I am contemplating doing the same. I also have Brazilian cherry wood floors in a vertical direction. Its a dinning room so I won’t have a rug. Do you think horizontal planks compete with vertical brazilian cherry floors? Thats my only hesitation.
Also, how did you find the pallets?
Thanks!
Rachel says
Even in a dining room I would recommend a rug. It’s helps ground the space and will lighten the room— try Annie Selke indoor/outdoor rugs— they feel soft underfoot but everything comes out with water practically and they also can be hoses off and dry quickly. Pallets you can find on Craigslist or Facebook sale groups.

I’m wanting to do a pallet wall in my living room and want pretty much that exact color of stain (I’m assuming you used some sort of stain) which one did you use?
Kelley says
Hello!!! Gorgeous!! Might you be able to share where you found the oak brackets for the shelf at?
Thank you so much for all the details!
Rachel says
Home Depot!
Lisa says
I really like the stains you chose for the wood, can you share what you used?
Elyssa says
I have a very similar shape family room and was looking to create an accent wall. Glad your post came up! Beautiful! May I ask where you bought the cocktail table?
Kelly says
Are the cords for the TV behind the pallet wall?
Amy says
I am inspired by this post – thank you!
Would you be willing to share where I can I find the skinnier coffee table that has pink flowers on it?

I would like to build a wooden frame koi pond inside our house and a chicken coop also

Love love love this wall! Found your website through Pinterest. Don’t know if you’ll see this or be able to answer but I am doing white shiplap on a half wall on the opposite side of the room where I would like to do this. Would it look odd to do this rustic wood and also have the white shiplap in the same room? We are doing similar white bookshelves and bench also.
Rachel says
I don’t think that would look odd! With opposite ends of the room it won’t be an issue and the pallet wood is more of a focal point, whereas the shiplap typically is more of a ‘texture’ look.

So pretty!! I loved the idea so much, we did the same in our new living room make-over. Few things to finish like crown moulding and doors on the bookshelves, but I’m really happy with how it turned out. Thanks for some great inspiration!

I LOVE this!!! We have an 18′ wall which our tv is currently on….we are FINALLY re-painting our living room and putting our touch on our home. What is the length of this wall? I am having a hard time deciding how long the shelving units need to be and how much the open plank area needs to be… Thank you for helping!!!

What color stain did you use .
