This post is about fall decorating ideas for a living room without using pumpkins and the obvious seasonal decorations. This can be helpful if you don’t have a lot of space to store seasonal decor, or you want something that will transition to the next season easier.
Today is week 3 for the Seasons of Home Series hosted by Kristen of Ella Claire Blog. Week 1 we shared our kitchens, week 2 we shared tablescapes, and today a group of 16 of us are sharing our living rooms!
Because I shared my actual living room recently re-decorated last week, I thought I’d share my front room, which serves as a second living room for our family.
Tip #1: Bring in Moody Colors
I’ve had a light gray traditional rug in this room for most of this year, and it was great for the spring and summer because it helped reflect a lot of light in this small space. However, for fall I brought in moody colors and cozy textures to beckon everyone to spend more time indoors. The darker colors absorb more light, making the warm glow of lamp or candle more inviting.
The rug was the main source of inspiration for the color scheme of the room, and is the same rug I got last fall and put in my living room.
I then pulled out pillows that repeated some of the colors in the rug but also added some variation in texture.
Tip # 2: Add Texture
Additional throws, and soft pillows that mimic the textures of sweaters worn in the fall, are a great way to make the room feel like the season, without having to use obvious decorations.
Tip #3: Stuff Vases with Something Long-Lasting
The leaves, flowers, and grasses are outside, drying out and changing colors so bring some of that indoors! Dried wheat is a wonderful long-lasting option to put into vases, because it is reminiscent of fall, and looks great for months without water (even years if you properly store it).
Cut branches from outside is always a pretty addition and can be quite the statement depending on the color and size of branches you use. You want something that will still look pretty as it starts to dry, so you aren’t feeling like you have to change things out every week.
You don’t need every inch of the room to have fall decor in order to transform the feel. Changing out a few key pieces and adding in some texture will instantly add a cozy ‘freshness’ that will help you transition from holiday to holiday without feeling the need to buy a bunch of new decor that you won’t use for much of the year.
