My daughter has a very tiny room. Big enough for a bed, maybe a bookcase and not much else. But just because it is small, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be functional and beautiful. So, I came up with a plan for the room to include a reading nook, a roll-away dresser, toy organization, a play area, and of course a comfy, cozy bed, all to fit in a 9’x12′ area. Here’s the design plan:
It all started with the bed and I worked my way around the room from there. To maximize space, I decided early on I wanted her to have a spindle daybed. That way it didn’t take up much space visually and it also served as a place to sit and read or play while in her room. I loved the daybeds that Land of Nod had…
…but I wanted the color that their Jenny Lind spindle beds had…
…so I decided to search craigslist for a daybed (only took me a couple weeks to find one and I’ve already gotten started on things) and spray paint it Rustoleum’s Seaside in Gloss.
While I was perusing Land of Nod, I fell in love with their Well-Nested quilt and ended up getting the duvet cover for the twin daybed. I LOVE it.
Pink and aqua are lovely together right? But I wanted the room to be fun, bright, and happy just like my daughter is… so the third main element I added was the rug. I knew I wanted something high quality, so I chose the Epiphany Stripes Yellow Rug from Rugs USA which is a cotton and wool blend.
Once I had my color scheme, the rest is just filling in the details with art…

To increase functionality without taking up space, I’m going to be building a trundle frame on wheels that will serve as a roll-away ‘dresser’ if you will. All of her clothes will be folded into the compartments but the dividers will be removable so a mattress can be used for it later. I’ll be doing something similar to this plan by Ana White:
Since I won’t need an actual dresser to hold her clothes and there is a small closet to hang dresses and coats, that frees up the opposite wall to have a small bookcase like this one for books and small baskets holding toys…
And a little canopy reading nook like this one…

I also will be removing the weird trim along the middle of the wall and installing board and batten…

Then painting the walls the lightest shade of pink, Yours Truly by Benjamin Moore…
and lastly stenciling over them with a light shade of white using the Esperanza Lace Tile stencil by Royal Design Studios.
Are you as excited as I am to see the final result? What tutorials and tips do you want to see from the above DIY projects?
